On May 23, 2009, former President Roh Moohyun jumped to his death off the Owl Cliff on Mt. Bongha. Roh has been under intensive investigation of the Ministry Justice and the prosecution for alleged bribery involving his family members. The whole country mourned over the sudden death of the former President who had the support of the general public as a President from a poor farming family. More than 5million people have paid their last respects to him across the nation. There was a groundswell of opinion that porgressive Roh’s death was caused by the excessive investigation of the present government, which was aiming to shake off the political foundation of Roh. The nationwide mourning parade was controlled by the police. Former President Kim Dae-jung, who had been a political supporter of Roh, was restrained from reading a farewell address of the deceased by the current government. After all, health condition of the former President Kim got worse due to old age and he passed away on August 18. In 2009, we lost two political leaders who represented the past decade of Korea when democracy had been flourished after overcoming the military dictatorship by our own efforts.
2009년 5월23일, 대한민국 노무현 전 대통령이 자신의 고향집 뒷산 부엉이바위에서 몸을 던져 자살했다. 그는 자신의 후임 대통령이 지휘하는 검찰로부터 불법정치자금 수수의혹에 대해 강도 높은 조사를 받던 중이었다. 서민출신의 대통령으로 대중의 많은 사랑을 받았던 그의 죽음을 온 국민이 애도했다. 장례기간 동안 500만명이 넘는 추모인파가 몰렸다. 진보성향이었던 그의 죽음은, 보수성향의 현 정부가 그의 정치적 기반을 무너뜨리기 위해 지나친 강압수사를 했기 때문이라는 여론이 팽배했다. 전국민적인 추모행렬은 경찰에 의해 통제됐다. 그의 정치적 후원자였던 김대중 전전 대통령은 장례식 추모글을 낭독하려다 현 정부에 의해 제지당했고 분노했다. 결국 김대중 대통령도 이후 노환에 의한 병세가 악화돼 8월 18일 별세한다. 이로써 군사독재를 국민 스스로의 힘으로 극복하고 민주주의를 꽃피웠던 대한민국의 지난 10년을 대표하던 두 정치 지도자가 2009년 한 해에 모두 세상을 떠났다. 이치열 미디어오늘 기자.
